Frequently asked questions

Everything about how CaptionPilot captures, corrects, and displays your captions.

What audio does CaptionPilot capture?

The desktop app captures your full system audio: game audio, your microphone, Discord, alerts, and browser audio. You control when capture starts and stops.

Does it work with OBS?

Yes. CaptionPilot gives you a browser-source URL you add to OBS. The overlay has a transparent background and supports custom fonts, positioning, line count, caption delay, and animation settings.

Does CaptionPilot replace Deepgram?

No. CaptionPilot builds on top of Deepgram. Deepgram produces the raw real-time transcript, and CaptionPilot then corrects gaming terminology, streamer slang, and your custom terms before captions reach your overlay.

Which games are supported?

There are game presets for titles like Minecraft, Valorant, Fortnite, Apex Legends, League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, Rocket League, Overwatch 2, Warzone, Roblox, GTA RP, Destiny 2, Rainbow Six Siege, and Marvel Rivals, plus a general streamer-slang preset. CaptionPilot works with any game; presets improve corrections for those titles.

Can I add custom terms?

Yes. Custom correction dictionaries let you add your username, community names, inside jokes, and any terms generic captioning gets wrong. Your custom rules apply alongside game presets.

Does CaptionPilot store my audio?

Audio is streamed to the transcription service to produce captions; CaptionPilot does not keep your audio by default. Correction Lab can record transcription sessions for your own review, but only when you explicitly opt in.

How does AI correction work?

Most corrections come from fast deterministic rules: safe text fixes, game presets, your custom dictionaries, and a local candidate ranker. An optional AI fallback can review ambiguous cases; when enabled, it receives a small amount of text context, never your audio.

What happens if the AI service fails?

Captions keep flowing. The AI fallback is optional and fails open: if it errors, times out, or is rate-limited, CaptionPilot uses the local correction result instead.

Does CaptionPilot work on macOS?

Not yet. CaptionPilot is currently Windows-first and in beta. macOS support is being considered for later.

How much latency does it add?

It depends on transcription speed, correction processing, the optional AI fallback, your network, and the caption delay you configure in the overlay. CaptionPilot is built for live use, but does not promise a specific latency number.

How are caption hours measured?

Caption hours are measured by processed live-caption time: the amount of audio CaptionPilot transcribes and corrects while a caption session is running.

What happens when I use all included hours?

The current backend enforces plan limits by stopping additional streaming time once the monthly allowance is exhausted. Overage pricing is documented for the v2 plans, but live overage billing should only be enabled when the billing implementation is configured to invoice it correctly.

Do unused hours roll over?

No. Included caption hours reset each billing period and unused hours do not roll over.

Can I cancel anytime?

Paid plans are managed through the Stripe customer portal when billing is configured. You can cancel before renewal to avoid the next charge; access continues according to the current subscription period.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The trial includes 2 caption hours for product evaluation. It has no overage and does not automatically convert to a paid plan unless billing is explicitly configured.

Do I need a card for the trial?

No card is required for the beta trial flow shown on the public site.

Does OpenAI usage cost extra?

No separate OpenAI line item is shown to customers today. Optional AI fallback usage is part of the plan economics and may be disabled or limited by configuration.

Can I use my own API key?

Bring-your-own API keys are not implemented. Treat BYOK as planned or exploratory, not available.
